Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic syndrome that results in elevated blood glucose levels and can lead to various health complications. It is an important public health problem with increasing incidence and prevalence worldwide, representing significant economic and social burdens. The aim of this study is to characterize the epidemiological profile of patients with diabetes mellitus registered in a Basic Health Unit of Sousa-PB. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive and exploratory study, with a quantitative and qualitative approach. The research was conducted during the period from February to March 2023 in a Basic Health Unit (BHU), composed of three teams of the Family Health Strategy (FHS), located in the municipality of Sousa-PB. Data were collected from the medical records of 100 patients with diabetes, using a questionnaire based on the Hiperdia System registration form. A predominance of females (62%), 40-69 years old (60%), mixed race (50%), married/stable relationship (58%), with incomplete elementary school education (45%), monthly family income equivalent to one minimum wage (49%), and diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (97%) was observed. Therefore, this study provides important subsidies for health professionals and management bodies to develop effective measures for diabetes prevention, screening, and control, with a particular focus on specific groups that are more vulnerable to this disease.
