This bibliographical research sought to clarify children's literature and its contribution to cognitive and social-emotional development. The same addressed the emergence and implications brought to the development process of the historical context of literature for children. As well as, it showed that this process was slow and difficult to access to the general and popular public, being for a long time, reserved only for the privileged social classes. The change occurred due to the social and educational demands of society. He also clarified about the importance of the school and the teacher in promoting and encouraging literature, since the beginning of the child's academic life. This work also addressed the main aspects of the pedagogical approach and methodologies that the teacher, an essential part in this process, can use in their pedagogical practice, as well as the most diverse and modern pedagogical resources available.
