INTRODUCTION: Maintaining health requires both general and specific care. For men - young or old - in addition to health care in a broad way, the Unified Health System (SUS) provides health services for the prevention and treatment of specific pathologies, such as prostate cancer. These interventions are based on programs and policies such as the National Policy for Integral Attention to Men's Health - PNAISH. However, negligence in taking care of one's own health is common among males. The objective of this study is to identify the reasons why young men do not adhere to their own health care. Therefore, campaigns to normalize the situation and continued training of health professionals can be effective strategies. However, further studies must be carried out in order to raise new hypotheses, seek new solutions and clarify the issue. REVIEW: A bibliographic review was carried out as a research method, with searches in books and scientific articles published in the last five years (2018-2023). DISCUSSION: The results pointed to a typical behavior of young men with regard to health care, with emphasis on factors related to commitment to work, since the culture exalts the man as the main provider of the family's needs. It was concluded that young Brazilian men believe that medical care is aimed at women. Because they are not familiarized with routine consultations such as health prevention, they demonstrate shame, fear of exams (mainly digital rectal exams) and the results.
