This study addresses the following research question: what are the contemporary discussions on solid waste management involving urban planning and sustainability indicators? The main objective is to present a systematic review on the relationship between urban planning, solid waste management, and sustainability indicators, based on an in-depth analysis of the 10 most cited articles, selected from the final set of studies included in the review. Specific objectives include identifying the content of the selected articles and comparing the studies, highlighting methodological similarities and results. The selection process followed the PRISMA 2020 protocol, beginning with the search and analysis of references published between 2015 and 2024 in the Scopus and Web of Science databases, using the R (RStudio) software and the Bibliometrix package. The results revealed a diversity of approaches and possibilities for urban planning in solid waste management in different countries. However, a scarcity of studies using sustainability indicators was observed. This highlights a gap in the use of waste management models that incorporate these indicators to support the development of public policies that are more suited to the local context.
