PERIODONTAL RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH POOR ADAPTATION OF PORCELAIN VENEERS

Abstract

Porcelain veneers have been widely adopted due to their increasing popularity driven by social media. They are durable restorations and aesthetically similar to natural teeth, often chosen for cosmetic improvements. Proper technical skill from the dentist is essential to perform the aesthetic procedure in a way that avoids periodontal issues. This study aims to review the literature on the impacts of poor adaptation of porcelain veneers on the periodontium, highlighting the resulting failures and their effects on the periodontal tissue. This is an integrative literature review with a qualitative approach. The articles were selected from the databases LILACS, SCIELO, PUBMED. The literature indicates that issues such as excess cement, inappropriate indications, poor preparation, invasion of the biological space, incorrect occlusal adjustment, and lack of proper follow-up can result in various periodontal conditions, such as gingival inflammation, bleeding, halitosis, redness, loss of support, gingival recession, and even alveolar bone resorption. These problems often can only be corrected through more invasive procedures or replacement of the veneers, causing significant damage to patients. Therefore, it is concluded that some dentists, motivated by financial gains, perform aesthetic procedures without the necessary technical knowledge and biological care of the periodontium. This results in serious problems for patients, reflecting professional irresponsibility. The essence of the dental profession is to preserve and promote oral health, a responsibility that cannot be neglected.
