PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHIES: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Peripheral neuropathies are diseases of the peripheral nervous system that can present different clinical manifestations according to the type of involvement. One of the main symptoms involves neuropathic pain, a topic that is often addressed in scientific studies. There are several diagnostic criteria and alarm signals for this type of pain, whose pathophysiological mechanisms and treatment include a lot of attention from the current scientific community, since many people around the world suffer from the consequences of this condition. Therefore, this narrative literature review brought together medical books and articles from the PUBMED and SciELO databases, aiming to classify peripheral neuropathies according to the pattern of nervous involvement, in addition to addressing specific consequences inherent to the nerve fibers of the human body. Finally, it was concluded that peripheral neuropathies can be classified into: mononeuropathy, multiple mononeuropathy, polyneuropathy and radiculopathy. Clinical manifestations occur according to the type of nerve fiber affected and the degree of involvement.
