Family organic agriculture plays a strategic role in the construction of sustainable food systems, reconciling food production, environmental conservation and rural development. In this context, agroecological fairs constitute important marketing and rapprochement channels between producers and consumers. This study aims to analyze the main challenges of organic production in family farming and the factors that influence the consumption of products in agroecological markets in Paraíba, as well as how to discuss the role of these spaces in sustainable development. This is a narrative literature review, with a qualitative and descriptive approach, carried out in PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science and SciELO databases. Foram selected 20 studies, organized in three thematic areas: challenges of organic production, determining factors of consumption and paper of Paraiban agroecological fairs. The results demonstrate that organic production faces difficulties related to access to credit, technical assistance, certification, marketing and environmental conditions. Regarding consumption, concerns about health, the quality of food, trust in the origin of products and the valorization of family farming stand out as motivating factors, as price and accessibility constitute important barriers. In Paraíba, agroecological fairs contribute to the strengthening of two short circuits of marketing, income management, food security and sustainable territorial development. It is concluded that the strengthening of family organic agriculture and agroecological fairs depends on the articulation between public policies, technical assistance, organization of farmers and strategies to encourage conscious consumption, contributing to the consolidation of more sustainable food systems.
