This work brings together a collection of academic research that reflects on different dimensions of global education in dialogue with historical, social, technological and cultural contexts. Each chapter proposes a critical and well-founded analysis of essential aspects of contemporary educational practice, offering the reader a broad view of the multiple layers that make up the teaching and learning process.
In the first chapter, “Portuguese in Brazil: grammar as an instrument for expanding Portuguese colonization policies in Brazilian territory during the colonial period”, we are led to understand how the language was used as a tool for domination, institutionalization and cultural homogenization in the formation of Brazilian linguistic identity.
In the second chapter, the authors explore the challenges and opportunities of Youth and Adult Education (EJA), with an emphasis on three fundamental axes: school dropout, continuing teacher training and active methodologies in science teaching. Based on updated bibliographic research, the need for more effective public policies and pedagogical practices that are sensitive to the reality of these subjects is discussed.
The third chapter, in turn, deals with “Education in the Digital Age”, highlighting the potential of media and visual language in the educational process. The author proposes a more dynamic, accessible teaching aligned with 21st century skills, reinforcing the role of digital literacy as an essential skill.
The fourth chapter then analyzes the transformations of education in contemporary times in light of the new generation of students. Based on Bauman’s concept of “liquid modernity”, the need for a more flexible approach, centered on the student and in line with the challenges brought by the digital society, is discussed.
The fifth chapter addresses the relationships between school management and teaching staff, highlighting how interpersonal relationships and the appreciation of teachers’ self-esteem directly impact the school environment and the quality of teaching. Democratic and participatory management emerges as a promising path to strengthening teaching practices.
The sixth chapter investigates the spatial limitations for the practice of Physical Education in schools. Based on a case study in the city of Manaus, the authors discuss the impacts of the lack of adequate infrastructure and propose viable alternatives to ensure the right to quality physical education. The seventh chapter investigates digital language and multiliteracies, especially with new ways of reading and writing in the 21st century. It also analyzes how multiliteracies are being addressed in Portuguese language teaching in light of the transformations of digital culture. The research advocates the critical integration of digital languages into the curriculum, valuing students' communicative experiences and promoting more current and meaningful teaching. This work therefore seeks to contribute to the current educational debate, offering theoretical and practical analyses that can inspire managers, teachers, researchers and students in the construction of a more critical, inclusive and transformative education. This collection reaffirms the complexity of the challenges faced by Brazilian education, while also pointing out possible paths for its transformation. From historical processes of linguistic colonization to the reconfiguration of pedagogical practices in the face of the digital age, including the valorization of teachers and the inclusion of young people and adults, each text reveals the urgency of rethinking the role of school, language, space and methodologies in the formation of autonomous and conscious individuals.
The thematic diversity presented not only broadens the academic repertoire, but also invites action: rethinking, reconstructing and innovating. We hope that these studies inspire reflections, debates and motivate practices that contribute to an education that is increasingly democratic, equitable and aligned with the demands of our time.
