POLICE EFFICIENCY AND LEGAL SECURITY: THE APPLICATION OF STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES IN THE MILITARY POLICE OF THE STATE OF PARANÁ

Abstract

Police work is a complex and highly responsible activity, especially in Paraná, a strategic state due to its geographic location and public security demands. In this context, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) emerge as essential tools for standardizing police actions, promoting uniformity, efficiency, and legal certainty in responding to incidents by integrating legislation with operational practices. These technical documents guide security agents from initial approaches to the proper legal classification of crimes, serving as practical guides that align current legislation with best operational practices. However, the lack of access, training, or knowledge regarding SOPs undermines the effectiveness of police work, leading to response errors and inappropriate approaches, which can negatively impact both the police force and society. This article highlights the importance of SOPs in police work in Paraná, emphasizing their relevance in ensuring efficient and legally sound operations. Additionally, it addresses the challenges of their implementation and proposes reflections on measures that could enhance their application in daily police routines.
