Abstract

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) usually presents in childhood or adolescence and is clinically manifested by hyperglycemia and diabetic ketoacidosis. It is an autoimmune disease characterized by lymphocytic infiltration and destruction of insulin-secreting cells in the islets of Langerhans. The influence of the pharmaceutical professional in monitoring patients with DM1 is fundamental, as care involves controlling blood glucose levels, the use of dosage regimens, changes in lifestyle habits and selection of medications according to needs, safety, cost and effectiveness. This work has the general objective of identifying what diabetes mellitus is and the effectiveness of controlling diabetes with the guidance of the pharmacist through pharmaceutical care. The literature review methodology was used, based on the years 2020 to 2023. The influence of the pharmaceutical professional in monitoring patients with DM1 is fundamental, as care involves controlling blood glucose, the use of dosage regimens, changes in habits of life and selection of medicines according to needs, safety, cost and effectiveness.
