NEUROSCIENCE AND ATTENTION IN THE DIGITAL AGE: THE IMPACT OF SHORT VIDEOS ON THE CHILDREN’S BRAIN

Abstract

This article discusses the impacts of instant digital stimuli, especially those resulting from the excessive consumption of short videos on digital platforms, on children’s neurocognitive development. The research examines how continuous exposure to fast, dynamic, and highly stimulating content influences brain neuroplasticity processes during childhood, a stage considered fundamental for the formation of neural connections and for the child’s emotional, cognitive, and social development. The study shows that prolonged use of these media may impair important aspects such as attention, concentration, memory, language, emotional regulation, and social interaction skills, in addition to encouraging impulsive behaviors and learning difficulties. The effects of digital hyperstimulation on the brain’s reward system, associated with the constant search for immediate gratification, are also analyzed. Furthermore, the research highlights the importance of balance in the use of technology, family and school supervision, and the promotion of healthy educational practices that encourage real-life experiences, social interactions, and appropriate stimuli for child development. It is concluded that, although digital resources may have educational potential, their excessive and unregulated use can generate significant consequences for neuroplasticity and for the child’s overall development, making it necessary to raise awareness among parents, educators, and society about the limits and care related to digital consumption during childhood.

Augusto Guilherme Teixeira Frutuozo, FUNIBER

Master's student in the final stage of the Master's Degree in Education: Languages, Culture and Technology (final defense scheduled for June 18, 2026). Holds eight postgraduate specialization degrees in: (1) Language, Literature and New Media; (2) Artificial Intelligence Applied to Education; (3) Educational Technology and Digital Pedagogy; (4) Didactics and Performance in Distance Education; (5) Active Learning Methodologies; (6) Education in the New Brazilian High School Model: Interdisciplinarity and Learning Pathways for Languages and Human Sciences; (7) Neuropsychopedagogy, Special and Inclusive Education; and (8) Clinical Psychopedagogy. Holds a Bachelor's Degree in Portuguese Language and Literatures (2004) and a Teaching Certification/Normal School Degree (2000). Currently enrolled in the seventh semester of a second undergraduate degree in Pedagogy.

Has 26 years of teaching experience in Elementary and Secondary Education, having worked at Colégio Espírito Santo and Colégio La Salle Canoas, teaching Portuguese Language, Literature, and Writing. Also worked at Curso Preparatório Azambuja, teaching Portuguese Language and Writing in both face-to-face and distance learning modalities.

Serves as lecturer and workshop facilitator for Somos Educação, delivering lectures, workshops, and motivational training sessions for teachers and students on topics related to education, new technologies, literacy, digital literacy, writing practices, and required literary readings. Collaborated in the revision and adaptation of the Teláris Project textbooks, published by Ática, to align with the Brazilian National Common Core Curriculum (BNCC). Actively participates in national and international congresses, seminars, and symposiums related to education, with experience in the production, presentation, and publication of articles, abstracts, and book chapters. Reader, researcher, and writer.
