Abstract

Introduction: Alcoholism is a chronic condition resulting from harmful and dependent alcohol consumption, associated with significant neuropsychiatric alterations. Its effects on mental health include an increased incidence of depressive and anxiety disorders, cognitive deficits, risky behaviors, and impairment of social and family relationships. It constitutes a major global public health problem, since alcohol abuse is related to approximately 2.6 million deaths and affects more than 400 million people with associated disorders. Given this scenario, understanding its impacts is fundamental for the development of effective strategies for prevention, care, and promotion of mental health. Objective: To analyze the impact of alcoholism on the mental health of individuals, considering the emotional, psychological, and social aspects involved. Methodology: This is a systematic literature review, with studies published between 2021 and 2026, selected from the Google Scholar, BVS, and SciELO databases. Results and Discussion: Studies have demonstrated a significant association between alcoholism and the development or worsening of mental disorders, especially depression, anxiety, and cognitive deficits. A higher prevalence of risky behaviors, social isolation, emotional instability, and impairments in family functioning were observed. The literature indicates that chronic alcohol consumption compromises therapeutic adherence, intensifies psychological suffering, and hinders psychosocial rehabilitation, highlighting the need for integrated and multidisciplinary approaches. Conclusion: It is concluded that alcoholism significantly impacts mental health, intensifying emotional, cognitive, social, family, and behavioral disorders. This emphasizes the urgency of effective prevention, early diagnosis, and continuous qualified multidisciplinary care.
