Abstract

Retinal surgery is a crucial ophthalmological procedure for treating a range of eye diseases such as retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy and epiretinal membranes. Despite its effectiveness in restoring vision and preventing complications, surgical intervention is not without risk, and infectious complications represent a significant challenge. These complications can include endophthalmitis, uveitis and post-operative infections which, if not treated properly, can lead to permanent vision damage. Therefore, the treatment of infectious complications of retinal surgery is a topic of great clinical importance, which requires a systematic review of the literature to consolidate the available evidence and provide guidance for medical practice. Objective: to analyze scientific publications from the last 10 years available in the PubMed, Scielo and Web of Science databases, in order to gather and evaluate the most relevant information on the treatment of infectious complications resulting from retinal surgery. This review aims to identify the most effective therapeutic approaches, challenges encountered, and recent trends in this area, offering valuable insights for ophthalmologists, retinal surgeons, and other healthcare professionals involved in treating these conditions. Methodology: to carry out this systematic literature review, we followed the PRISMA checklist. We used the PubMed, Scielo and Web of Science databases to identify articles published in the last 10 years related to the treatment of infectious complications of retinal surgery. We used the following five descriptors: "retina surgery," "infectious complications," "treatment," "endophthalmitis," and "uveitis." The inclusion criteria for this systematic literature review cover articles published in the last 10 years that are available in English, Spanish or Portuguese and that address the treatment of infectious complications after retinal surgery. Exclusion criteria include duplicate articles, studies not relevant to the treatment of infectious complications after retinal surgery and articles that do not provide clinical data or substantial information on the topic. Results: 15 studies were selected. The systematic review revealed a number of effective therapeutic approaches for treating infectious complications after retinal surgery, including the use of antibiotics, corticosteroids, and additional surgical procedures. Furthermore, the review highlighted the importance of preventing these complications through strict asepsis protocols and infection control measures. Several studies have discussed the challenges associated with different types of infectious complications, highlighting the need for personalized approaches. Conclusion: This systematic literature review provided a comprehensive overview of the treatment of infectious complications of retinal surgery. The evidence gathered suggests that individualized therapeutic approaches and infection prevention play a crucial role in the successful management of these complications. Healthcare professionals dealing with patients undergoing retinal surgery can benefit from this information, helping to improve patients' clinical outcomes and quality of life.
