Abstract

In this article I cover a brief overview of the emergence of the term “literacy”. Initially, I bring concepts from some authors who define literacy and its processes. In the second moment I place literacy in history, reporting from the first signs of the emergence of literacy in antiquity to the present day. I conclude by discussing the programs created to eradicate illiteracy in Brazil in the initial grades, presenting their objectives, which methods offered contribute to the learning process, emphasizing the support offered to teachers so that they can meet the challenges posed by these programs.
