Abstract

In order to obtain satisfactory gains, cattle farming demands nutritional efficiency to achieve its production objectives. The ability to find foods that provide the necessary nutritional requirements and at a low cost are determining factors. In this context, the purpose of this work was to study the advances in nutritional supplementation in cattle. The objectives of this work were to study the history of nutritional supplementation of cattle in Brazil in the last decades and to evaluate the changes that occurred in the type of supplement used, from the use of common salt (sodium chloride), through mineralization with macro and microminerals, evolving into the mineral salt/urea system, a family of multiple supplements (nitrogen salt, protein salt, protein-energy supplements, semi-confinement) and feedlots. A survey was carried out on how research was developed for the generation, dissemination and adoption of these new technologies, emphasizing which institutions worked the most in this direction.
