For many years, livestock was an area of few instrumental technological advances, since when man domesticated bovine animals to serve as food, breeding and grazing techniques have advanced little. Our country has been experiencing a rise in beef cattle production since the 1980s. This growth was a consequence of policies to encourage production for export, genetic improvement of the herd, search for new productive frontiers, sanitary policies to combat diseases, modernization of pasture management techniques and field organization. Inspired by developed countries, new production techniques were implemented on the national scene, and part of these practices was due to the efforts of governmental organizations for technological development such as the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation - Embrapa. In the last 9 years, the livestock sector has undergone new changes in the way it is managed, with the advent of the 4.0 revolution, in which the concept of livestock 4.0 was created. Through state-of-the-art technology, such as robotization and automation of many processes, it seeks to optimize meat production, and this form of management is called precision livestock. In this article, an approach was made to the technological development tools used in livestock production, from its beginnings to the implementation of the livestock 4.0 concept.
