Over-the-counter medications (OTC) are those that do not require a medical prescription to be purchased and are indicated for the treatment of self-limiting health problems considered to be of low severity. However, as they are exempt from prescription, they must be used with caution and their dispensing must be accompanied by the proper guidance of a qualified professional, as these drugs can cause damage to health when used inappropriately and indiscriminately. The pharmacist is the most qualified professional to promote the use of MIPs in a safe and rational way, thus avoiding possible problems related to inappropriate and indiscriminate use. At the time of dispensing, the pharmacist has the duty to provide guidance on the correct use of the medication, aiming at the best pharmacological treatment to provide a better quality of life for the patient.
