The main purpose of this article is to seek understandings about a theme that has been the constant focus of reflections and debates in civil society, research groups and the press in recent years: the use of police force. Discussions pervade the aspect of the limit of what is legal or what goes beyond the labor and constitutional functions of the performance of these public security services, in the face of crisis situations and operations carried out that put the lives of the citizens involved at risk. One of the main objectives of this narrative is to analyze the various guiding aspects that involve this theme, and its relationship with civil society – including within the scope of the social representation that these professionals have with the population served. Finally, it is necessary, among the narratives that contribute to the theme, to reflect on the condition of the military police in the scope of investment in public security.
