The present work proposes the resumption of the debate on developmentalism as an economic model capable of mitigating social injustices. The main objective of the work was to answer the question: “why does Brazil need a national development project?”. The bibliographic review and the hypothetical-deductive approach were adopted as a research method. The specific objectives of the work were: to understand the relationship between constitutional dirigisme with the maintenance of underdevelopment by hegemonic elites and why this harms the country so much. It is concluded that the objectives of the Constitution of the Republic could be more easily achieved through a change in the economic model and the implementation of public policies for the generation of employment and income by the State.
