In Brazil, one of the most pressing issues regarding social problems and inequality in our society is the excessive number of Brazilians who are incarcerated. The present work intends to analyze the profile of the Brazilian prisoner, evaluating if there is a preferred pattern or stereotype chosen by the system. Next, it will propose solutions or strategies based on Youth and Adult Education and prison work that can help reverse the chaotic situation of the Brazilian penitentiary system. It will also analyze a successful experience at the State Penitentiary of Arroio dos Ratos - RS. Finally, this work will come to the conclusion that it is possible to reverse this chaotic picture of the Brazilian penitentiary system, through intelligent measures of prisional management and policies that go beyond keeping people locked up in human warehouses. This article was constructed based on bibliographic research, analysis of data made available by the Brazilian government and field research as a penitentiary agent.
