THE CHARQUEADAS RIO GRANDENS AND THE EFFECTS ON AFRO-BRAZILIAN COLONIZATION IN THE CITIES OF PELOTAS (RS) AND CANGUÇU (RS)
Rio Grande do Sul charqueadas were an important industry located in the southern region of Brazil, specifically in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. In this book, the discussions will surround the cities of Pelotas and Canguçu, belonging to the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
These cities were dedicated to the production of beef jerky, a type of dried meat used as food and exported to other regions of the country and abroad. The production of beef jerky was carried out from cattle, and the industry was important for the region's economy for many years.
However, the decline of charqueadas in Rio Grande do Sul at the end of the 19th century is a subject of discussion between historians and economists. Some theories point to the influence of black and indigenous enslaved labor as one of the factors that contributed to the decline of the industry, while others point to competition with other sources of protein, such as fresh meat, or the lack of investment in technology and industry modernization.
This work examined the possible influences of slave labor on the decline of charqueadas in Rio Grande do Sul. The scope of this investigative journey is to offer elements that corroborated for the downfall of this important gaucho industry, thus, corroborating to understand the predominant economic factors that prevented Rio Grande do Sul from maintaining the beef jerky industry at the end of the 19th century.
Before presentation, I wish a fruitful reading for all,
