Obesity is a multifactorial disease resulting from aspects such as genetics, biochemistry, eating habits, sedentary lifestyle, emotions, environment, culture and psychology. These appear to have a significant role in the emergence and evolution of the obesity condition. There are several treatments related to obesity, with bariatric surgery being an intervention with the greatest impact on the health of patients. Thus, we sought to present the loss of muscle mass in patients undergoing bariatric surgery. To achieve this, we sought to build a review of the previous literature, qualitative, exploratory, descriptive, as well as to present the discoveries of the last 5 years. It is concluded that after bariatric surgery, the follow-up of a physical educator and nutritional follow-up is essential to guarantee the maintenance of lean body mass and supplementation of nutritional deficiencies that are common in the post-surgical period, since in addition to reducing food intake, the patient the absorption of nutrients is impaired, especially protein, which leads to loss of muscle mass.
