This article addresses the study of the main impacts of the use of the Special Regime for Remote Learning (REAR) in compulsory basic education during the Covid-19 pandemic, with the general objective of understanding the impacts of REAR on basic education. For research purposes, the bibliographic review methodology was adopted. The survey results showed that Brazil was not prepared for the abrupt change from traditional face-to-face teaching to REAR due to social inequality and digital exclusion. The lack of effective public policies in the country had negative impacts mainly on the less affluent classes. In addition to excluding students who did not have financial and technological resources to continue their studies, the imposition of REAR resulted in high rates of school dropout, as well as learning deficits.
