Abstract

This study focuses on succession and professionalization in family businesses. The objectives of this work are to study the different forms of succession in companies of different ages and sizes in case studies in academic production in Brazil from 2012 to 2020 and to reflect on the need for professionalization of future successors, in addition to technical knowledge, also covering the interpersonal skills and discuss human resource management strategies to balance family and business issues. This is a literature review carried out in the Google Scholar database, with articles published in Portuguese and English between 2012 and 2020. A total of 44 articles considered relevant to the study were used. For articles and/or works with case studies of succession in companies, 13 articles were found that were categorized into: with succession plan and without succession plan. The results showed that larger companies are more concerned with family succession than smaller companies, although there are exceptions. It was concluded that the preparation of succession is the secret to the growth and longevity of family businesses. If a family business wants to have success and longevity, it must develop a succession plan, because when you have a plan about who the possible successors are, how they will be trained to occupy the position, what training and experience will be required, when that candidate will work in the company, everything becomes better to deal with.
