Stroke is the second leading cause of death in the world and, although the mortality rate in Brazil has decreased in the period evaluated, the number of hospitalizations is increasing over the years. With the increase in life expectancy and the advance of age, the chances of developing the disease also increase, once the risk factors are higher. Thus, in order to perform an epidemiological analysis related to stroke in Brazil, from January 2010 to December 2019, data were collected from the Hospital Information System/Unified Health System (SIH/SUS) - DATASUS, evaluating hospitalizations, deaths and mortality rate by sex, age group and region of the country. According to these data, in the last ten years, 1,410,410 hospitalizations caused by stroke were performed, being more prevalent in the elderly, who were also the ones who most evolved to death. In relation to the regions of the country, it is observed that hospitalizations occurred more in the southeast and northeast regions. However, the north and northeast had the highest mortality rates. In this context, it is possible to evaluate the main causes and risk factors for its occurrence in the population, establishing a plan for greater primary care and focusing on the control of its risk factors, in a way that allows more effective prevention in the future. All of that with attention mainly to the quality of life of the patient, covering its social, professional and economic spheres.
