Abstract

 Introduction: The present study was about postpartum depression, which occurs frequently today and thus affects thousands of women every year, mainly in Brazil. Objective: Therefore, the objective of the present work is to highlight the damage caused by postpartum depression, as well as the symptoms of the disease and also the consequences of postpartum depression for both mothers and babies. Material and Methods: This is a qualitative research, adopted as a method of literature review, where scientific journals, books and articles obtained from the electronic databases Google Scholar, Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo), with the focus of presenting descriptions that portray the subject treated here. Results: it was noticed that the symptoms are similar to those of common depression in other patients, but the issue of pregnancy must always be taken into account, as well as the life history of the puerperal woman. And in some cases, family members may find the behavior of the new mother normal, especially the one who is having her child for the first time, or even in the case of teenagers, so the knowledge of postpartum depression should be mentioned, disclosed to that prevention and treatment are present in the life of pregnant women Conclusion: Interest in this topic was aroused due to the concern and desire to understand and minimize the suffering of postpartum women when they develop postpartum depression.
