MUCORMYCOSIS IN PATIENTS WITH DIABETES MELLITUS: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Individuals with Diabetes Mellitus (DM) are generally characterized as patients most susceptible to infectious complications, due to their immunosuppression status, such as bacterial, viral and fungal processes. Among fungal diseases, rhinocerebral mucormycosis stands out. The objective of this work is to discuss the infection by Mucormycosis fungi and its evolution in immunodepressed patients, such as diabetics. The present study was carried out through a literature view, based on articles published electronically in the data bases of PubMed, Medline and Scielo, using the following descriptors: diabetes mellitus, immunosuppression and mucormycosis. The patient decompensating with diabetic ketoacidosisis what of ten culminates in the appearance of mucormycosis. It can manifest itself in several places such as lung, gastrointestinal tract, central nervous system, but the most common form of presentation is rhinocerebral. To start the treatment of the condition, we must carry out the control of the underlying disease, Diabetes Mellitus, normalizing blood glucose levels. It is imperative that diabetic sad hereto the correct treatment, since their complications promote susceptibility to various infections. Strengthening heal the education is one of the methods that can help to reduce the high prevalence of complications in diabetic individuals. Thus, carriers will be encouraged to take care of themselves and control this condition, ensuring a better quality of life.
