Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is growing worldwide and this increase is due to the increased incidence of hypertension, diabetes, prostate cancer and other pathologies. Objective: This article aims to describe what chronic kidney disease really is within its clinical aspects, the importance of hemodialysis and clarify the risks of this disease from its beginning, along with the treatments that nursing professionals provide. Materials and Methods: This is an integrative literature review. Data were collected from the second half of 2021 to the first half of 2022, using the descriptors hemodialysis, chronic kidney disease and kidney disease. Results: One of the main risk factors for chronic kidney disease is diabetes and hypertension, both cared for in Primary Care, the main gateway to the Unified Health System (SUS), in one of the 42,885 Basic Health Units distributed throughout the country.
