This article aims to discuss and reflect on issues related to the Minas Gerais Socio-educational System, especially with regard to the collection, systematization and availability of data regarding the socio-educational care provided in the State. For this, a dialogue is established with a recent survey on data from the Brazilian Prison and Penal Systems as well as the justice bodies responsible for public policies aimed at individuals deprived of their liberty, whether young or adult. In addition to the dialogue with recent research, a contextualization of the Minas Gerais Socio-Educational System was presented, in order to understand how the data provided by public institutions help us (or not) to identify the profile of the young person who has been through the Socio-Educational System today. The discussions point to a certain selectivity on the part of repressive and punitive policies, that is most of those who are arrested or cautioned for committing crimes or similar acts are black and poor. The statistics are clear, it is real and invites us to new reflections.
