The anabolic androgenic steroids AAS are synthetic derivatives of testosterone, however, they have anabolic and androgenic properties, the abuse of these substances is frequent in young professional athletes. Athletes manifest endocrinological symptoms that are the most frequent, many of which are irreversible. Objective: To determine the adverse effects of anabolic androgenic steroids in high performance athletes Methodology: bibliographic research of documents, systematic reviews, journal articles and scientific studies. of clinical and endocrinological scientific societies. Conclusion: The prevalence of AAS consumption in professional athletes is high, the population at risk is young adults, the dosage of substances widely exceeds the physiological threshold and has no medical control in most cases. Clinical manifestations are frequent, with endocrinological manifestations being the most frequent, followed by cardiovascular, dermatological, psychiatric, hepatic, renal and hematological manifestations. Monitoring of professional athletes should be multidisciplinary, with constant medical evaluation of the metabolic and endocrinological manifestations of supplementation in order to reduce AAS abuse and its adverse effects.
