INTRODUCTION: Adherence to vegetarianism has been subdued, has been opting for this dietary pattern for reasons such as health, ethics, environment, religion and animal rights. According to studies such as well-planned vegetarian diets, they have numerous benefits acting in the prevention of various diseases, including colorectal cancer. OBJECTIVE: to perform a literature review on the association between vegetarian diets and colorectal cancer prevention. METHODS: Searches were performed for works published between 2011 and 2021 in Portuguese, Spanish and English, in Medline / Pubmed, Academic Google, National Cancer Institute (INCA) and Brazilian vegetarian Society (SVB) databases. RESULTS: Studies show that excessive consumption of unprocessed and processed meat, as well as a diet low in fiber are related to a higher risk of developing colorectal cancer. risk factors. CONCLUSION: a balanced diet, adequate in fiber and without excesses in relation to meat consumption, as well as the preference for fresh and minimally processed foods is essential for the prevention of colorectal cancer.
