Fibromyalgia (FM) is the most common cause of generalized chronic musculoskeletal pain, mainly affecting young females. The etiology of this syndrome remains unknown and its pathophysiology uncertain, but its central mechanism involves pain dysfunction by the CNS and hypersensitivity of multifactorial origin. Given the social and economic impact of chronic pain secondary to FM, the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment are reviewed and updated in this article.
