THE USE OF DETECTION DOGS TO IDENTIFY ILLICIT SUBSTANCES IN HIGHWAY POLICING BY THE PARÁ MILITARY POLICE

Abstract

The use of detection dogs is a specialized resource capable of increasing the selectivity and speed of inspections aimed at locating narcotics and other illicit substances concealed in vehicles, luggage, and cargo. This article analyzes the relevance of using detection dogs during highway policing carried out by the Military Police of the State of Pará, considering the operational integration between the Highway Police Battalion and the Canine Operations Battalion. This is a qualitative, applied, exploratory, and descriptive study based on a literature review and documentary analysis of legislation, institutional regulations, scientific articles, and official police operation records. The findings indicate that police-dog teams can shorten search times, direct human inspection toward specific compartments, and improve the ability to locate concealed substances, especially at checkpoints and along logistical corridors. Performance, however, depends on continuous training, team certification, animal welfare, risk-based planning, preservation of the chain of custody, and respect for individual rights. The study concludes that the planned use of detection dogs is a relevant tool for highway policing in Pará, provided that it is integrated with technical protocols, auditable records, and continuous performance assessment.
