This study aimed to analyze the scientific literature on the relationship in drug interaction between antibiotics and contraceptives. A systematic literature review was carried out in several databases, with the time interval between 2008 and 2021. Oral contraceptives are the most widespread and used method in the world and considered a very effective reversible method, as antibiotics are capable natural or synthetic compounds of inhibiting the growth or causing death of bacteria. The drug interaction of these two drugs occurs mainly for two reasons, the first is causing the death of colon bacteria, which are fundamental for the pharmacokinetics of oral contraceptives, and the second is accelerating the biotransformation, decreasing the serum concentration, reducing effectiveness and requiring adjustment in the dosage of several drugs metabolized in the liver.
