The objective of this study is to present the role of nursing in risk classification within urgent and emergency care services through an integrative literature review. Data were collected using the PubMed, SciELO, and REME (Revista Mineira de Enfermagem/UFMG) virtual libraries, employing the descriptors "nursing conduct in risk classification," "nurse," and "triage protocols." The study results demonstrated that risk classification involves scientific knowledge, clinical assessment, and decision-making, with professional experience and the proper application of protocols being essential. Factors related to care demand, overcrowding, structural conditions, and service organization were also identified. Professional education, technologies, and auditing with feedback were highlighted as strategies for improvement. It is evident that nursing practice is crucial for identifying clinical priorities and organizing the flow of care, requiring a combination of professional qualification, appropriate protocol use, and working conditions commensurate with the complexity of the care provided.
