ZOOLOGICAL EXHIBITION IN A NON-FORMAL SETTING: CONTRIBUTIONS TO SCIENTIFIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

Abstract

Zoology is a key area of ​​the biological sciences dedicated to studying the diversity of the kingdom Animalia, contributing significantly to our understanding of evolution, ecological relationships, and global biodiversity. However, teaching the subject faces various challenges, such as limited educational resources, institutional structural constraints, and hurdles in teacher training. In this context, non-formal educational settings serve as important tools for science communication, fostering meaningful learning, and enhancing teaching practice. This study reports on a zoological exhibition held in public squares in the municipality of Teixeira de Freitas, Bahia, which attracted 241 visitors of various ages. The activity featured taxidermy specimens, osteological material, and animals preserved in solutions, enabling direct interaction between visitors and the biological specimens on display. During the exhibitions, various misconceptions regarding the animals and inappropriate environmental practices were observed, sparking educational discussions aimed at raising scientific and environmental awareness. The results demonstrate that zoological exhibitions in non-formal settings are effective strategies for scientific literacy, dispelling myths, and promoting environmental education, while also contributing to the academic and communication skills of the organizers.
