Abstract

The traditional construction method, consisting of a concrete structure and ceramic brick masonry, is the most widely used in Brazil due to its relatively lower cost compared to other existing methods, despite its longer construction time. Construction using maritime shipping containers emerges as an alternative - particularly regarding construction time—since it eliminates the need to build a complete structural framework, requiring only transport, positioning, and interior finishing. This study designed, budgeted, analyzed, and compared the costs and timelines for building a residence using both construction systems. It was found that container-based construction resulted in a cost reduction of approximately 20% and a construction time reduction of approximately 44%. In addition to these benefits, the method offers environmental advantages: it minimizes material waste and the improper disposal of solid waste associated with conventional methods, while repurposing containers that would otherwise be discarded after their maritime service life ended.
