THE USE OF INVASIVE DEVICE-RELATED INFECTION PREVENTION BUNDLES AS A PATIENT SAFETY STRATEGY IN THE INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

To analyze how the implementation and adherence to infection prevention bundles related to invasive devices impact patient safety in Intensive Care Units. This is an integrative literature review with a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive approach. The search was conducted in the SciELO, PubMed/MEDLINE, BVS, and BDENF databases, covering publications from 2020 to 2025, using controlled descriptors combined with Boolean operators. Original studies addressing implementation, adherence, or impact of bundles in ICUs were included, totaling 13 studies after eligibility criteria were applied. Data were analyzed through critical reading, synoptic organization, and thematic content analysis. The findings demonstrated significant reductions in CLABSI, VAP, and CAUTI rates following structured bundle implementation, with additional impact on hospital mortality and healthcare costs. Multicenter studies reported up to a 74% reduction in infection risk and substantial financial savings. Full adherence to bundle components was identified as a determinant factor for sustainable outcomes. Systematic implementation and continuous monitoring of infection prevention bundles are effective strategies to enhance patient safety in critical care settings, reducing preventable infections and strengthening clinical governance in ICUs.
