BIOMIMETIC STRATEGY FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF A CRACKED TOOTH USING RIBBOND® FIBER: A CLINICAL CASE REPORT

The biomimetic approach to the management of cracked teeth represents a conservative restorative alternative capable of preserving the remaining tooth structure, providing mechanical reinforcement, and restoring function through materials that mimic the biomechanical behavior of dental tissues. This clinical case report describes the management of a cracked tooth using Ribbond® polyethylene fiber associated with a direct adhesive restorative technique. A 30-year-old female patient presented to the dental clinic complaining of pain during mastication involving tooth #36. Clinical examination revealed an extensive restoration, occlusal overload resulting from the absence of posterior teeth, and parafunctional habits. The diagnosis of a dentin crack was established through clinical inspection and transillumination. Due to the limited interocclusal space, a direct restorative approach was selected. Initially, the pre-existing restoration was removed, and the crack was interrupted. Subsequently, structural reinforcement was performed using Ribbond® polyethylene fiber combined with an adhesive protocol and composite resin restoration. After occlusal adjustment and finishing procedures, the patient was followed for one year and six months, during which no pain symptoms were reported, and the restoration maintained its structural integrity and masticatory function. This case highlights the predictability and effectiveness of the biomimetic approach using Ribbond® polyethylene fiber for the management of cracked teeth, representing a conservative alternative for structural reinforcement and preservation of tooth structure in cases with limited interocclusal space.
