Abstract

The article analyzes the evolution of Building Information Modeling (BIM) dimensions and their integration with emerging technologies in the construction industry. Through an exploratory literature review, studies published between 2024 and 2026 in the Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases were examined. The results indicate that the main recent transformation of BIM is not related to the creation of new dimensions, but rather to the integration of the already established dimensions (3D to 7D) with technologies such as Digital Twins, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT). The analyzed studies demonstrate that this convergence enhances capabilities for monitoring, forecasting, decision-making, and management throughout the lifecycle of construction projects. Furthermore, they highlight benefits related to cost reduction, schedule optimization, increased operational efficiency, improved sustainability, and strengthened predictive maintenance strategies. It is concluded that BIM is evolving from an information modeling tool into an intelligent integrated management platform capable of operating with real-time data and supporting strategic decision-making across different stages of built assets.
