This article aimed to analyze the risks associated with the irregular use of weight-loss medications in Brazil, emphasizing their adverse effects, health consequences, and the regulatory measures related to the control of these substances. The specific objectives were to identify the main weight-loss medications used in the country, describe their side effects, assess the health impacts resulting from their indiscriminate use, and discuss the importance of regulatory oversight and professional monitoring during treatment. The study employed a qualitative bibliographic review, based on the analysis of scientific articles, books, theses, dissertations, and official documents addressing the topic. The findings showed that the indiscriminate use of weight-loss medications may lead to significant cardiovascular, neurological, psychiatric, and metabolic complications, especially when used without medical prescription and professional supervision. The study concludes that the rational use of weight-loss medications, combined with the work of healthcare professionals and strengthened regulatory and educational actions, is essential to reduce health risks and promote safer and more effective treatments.
