Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic syndrome with a significant impact on public health; its progressive course and inadequate management result in high rates of hospitalization and mortality. The present study aimed to analyze the epidemiological profile of hospital admissions due to DM and its complications in the state of Paraná from 2015 to 2024. This is an epidemiological, descriptive, and retrospective study with a quantitative approach, conducted using secondary data from the Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS) via the DATASUS platform. A total of 35,331 hospitalizations were analyzed during the study period, showing an upward trend until 2019, followed by a decline between 2020 and 2022, possibly associated with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The demographic analysis revealed that the 50–59 age group accounted for the highest volume of hospitalizations (37.5%) and deaths (48.4%), highlighting the chronic nature of the disease and the impact of late complications. Regionally, the Eastern macro-region had the highest indicators, accounting for 40.15% of hospitalizations and nearly half of all deaths in the state. The results suggest that, although high population density influences the figures, the increase in hospitalizations with advancing age points to weaknesses in Primary Health Care regarding the prevention of complications and adherence to treatment. It can be concluded that strengthening early diagnosis and long-term follow-up is essential to alleviate the burden on the hospital system and improve the quality of life for the population of Paraná.
