Abstract

Introduction: Primary Health Care (PHC) is the first level of care within the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) and is responsible for coordinating care and promoting population health. In this context, the presence of pharmacists has become increasingly important, particularly regarding the promotion of the rational use of medicines, pharmacotherapeutic follow-up, and guidance provided to healthcare service users. General Objective: This study aimed, in light of the scientific literature, to evaluate the importance of pharmacists' work in Primary Health Care within the context of the Brazilian Unified Health System. This is a qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory study conducted through a literature review. Methodology: Data were collected from the Virtual Health Library (VHL) and PubMed databases using descriptors related to primary health care, pharmaceutical services, and pharmacists, combined through Boolean operators. Studies published between 2020 and 2026 and available in Portuguese, English, or Spanish were included. The findings indicate that pharmacists' performance in Primary Health Care Units is a key factor in ensuring patient safety, preventing medication-related problems, and improving treatment adherence, especially among patients with chronic diseases. Conclusion: Furthermore, the inclusion of pharmacists in multidisciplinary healthcare teams strengthens comprehensive care and enhances the effectiveness of health services. Therefore, the presence of pharmacists in Primary Health Care is essential for improving pharmaceutical services, promoting the responsible use of medicines, and strengthening SUS public health policies.
