ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND REVERSE LOGISTICS OF MEDICINES: CONTRIBUTIONS OF AN EXTENSION PROJECT

Improper disposal of expired or unused medications represents a significant environmental and public health issue, associated with increased pharmaceutical consumption, self-medication practices, and the accumulation of medicines in household storage. In this context, the present study aimed to assess and understand the level of knowledge of both the academic community and the general public associated with the Federal Rural University of the Semi-Arid Region (UFERSA) regarding the proper disposal of medications, as well as to promote environmental awareness initiatives. This applied research adopted a qualitative-quantitative approach, with a descriptive and interventionist character, and was developed through a university extension project. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to 263 participants, including students, university staff, and members of the general community, during educational activities conducted in schools, public spaces, and within the university environment. The results revealed that 97.34% of participants store medications in their homes, while more than 80% were unaware of proper disposal methods. Furthermore, 72.24% reported not knowing specific collection points for expired medications and related pharmaceutical waste. Conversely, 97.72% recognized the importance of expanding educational campaigns on the subject. The study concludes that there is a significant lack of information regarding the correct disposal of medications, which contributes to inadequate practices with the potential to cause environmental impacts, particularly soil and water resource contamination. The extension activities proved effective in raising public awareness, reinforcing the importance of environmental education, the expansion of reverse logistics systems, and the strengthening of public policies aimed at pharmaceutical waste management.
