Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance (AR) represents one of the main challenges to global public health, being exacerbated by the inappropriate and irrational use of drugs within the antimicrobial therapeutic class. In this context, the pharmaceutical professional plays a fundamental role in promoting the rational use of medicines, acting in patient counseling, pharmacotherapeutic follow-up, and the prevention of indiscriminate antibiotic use. This study aims to demonstrate the importance of pharmacists in combating antimicrobial resistance (AR) in primary care, highlighting the encouragement of correct medication use and the promotion of health education. The results demonstrate that pharmaceutical care contributes significantly to reducing medication errors, improving treatment adherence, and raising public awareness about the risks of self-medication and the inappropriate use of antimicrobials. It is emphasized that pharmacists play an essential role in preventing AR by promoting safe and effective practices in its use, such as monitoring storage under appropriate temperature, providing guidance on good hygiene practices, and monitoring therapeutic adherence in the home environment, directly contributing to preserving treatment efficacy.
