ANALISYS OF ADVERSE EVENTS RELATED TO PICC INSERTION IN NEWBORNS

Objective: To analyze the main complications associated with the insertion and use of the Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) in newborns and to determine which nursing care measures are necessary to mitigate them. Methods: An integrative literature review, of an exploratory and descriptive nature, conducted in the VHL, SciELO, PubMed, Embase, and CINAHL databases, including full articles published between the years 2014 and 2024. The final sample consisted of 11 articles Results: The most frequent complications in the use of the PICC include catheter tip malposition, catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI), obstructions, phlebitis, and infiltration or extravasation. As mitigation measures, the literature highlights the importance of the nurse's technical-scientific training, adherence to infection prevention bundles, and the correct execution of maintenance, such as pulsatile flushing. Additionally, the use of technological innovations during insertion, such as ultrasonography (USG) and intracavitary electrocardiogram (IC-ECG), combined with the use of anthropometric formulas (weight and height) for catheter measurement, have demonstrated great efficacy in reducing iatrogenic events and primary malposition. Conclusion: The PICC is an essential intravenous tool for the survival of critically ill newborns; however, its use is not without risks. The use of advanced technologies to guide insertion, combined with the standardization of care through institutional protocols and the continuing education of the nursing team, are the pillars to ensure the permeability of the device, reduce non-elective removals, and guarantee the safety of the neonatal patient.
