CLINICAL EVALUATION OF THE SUCCESS OF ENDODONTIC TREATMENT IN SINGLE-SESSION OR MULTIPLE-SESSION APPROACHES

Abstract

Introduction: The debate regarding the efficacy of single-visit versus multiple-visit endodontic treatment is central to contemporary endodontics, aiming to balance biological success and clinical efficiency. Objective: To clinically evaluate the success of single-visit endodontic treatment compared to multiple visits, analyzing healing parameters, symptom resolution, and complications. Methodology: An integrative literature review was conducted in PubMed and VHL (BVS) databases, covering 16 articles published between 2021 and 2026, using the PICO strategy and health descriptors. Results: Studies indicate that both protocols present similar clinical and radiographic success rates. Single-visit therapy proved effective even in teeth with periapical lesions, with postoperative pain incidence comparable to multiple visits, especially when combined with technologies such as photobiomodulation. Discussion: Rigorous disinfection is the determining factor for success, regardless of the number of sessions. The choice of protocol should be based on anatomical complexity, operator skill, and scientific evidence. Conclusion: There is no absolute superiority between the methods. Single-visit therapy is a viable, safe, and efficient alternative, provided that the principles of cleaning and shaping the root canal system are respected.
