Civil construction is experiencing modernization driven by the spread of BIM (Building Information Modeling), which facilitates the development of integrated and collaborative projects. In Brazil, Law No. 14,133/2021 reinforced this trend by prioritizing BIM in public procurement. However, despite advances, BIM presents significant challenges, such as interoperability barriers and repetitive modeling processes that require intensive manual labor, not being a fully "intelligent" methodology. Recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has gained prominence, demonstrating the ability to surpass human performance in various tasks. Given this scenario, the research questions how AI can enhance the design process. The objective is to analyze the potential of integrating AI and BIM in project management, as well as to identify emerging trends. The study reviews the foundations of BIM, from its conception to its applications and limitations, and explores AI concepts such as Machine Learning (predictive and descriptive) and Evolutionary Computation for optimization. It is concluded that AI emerges as essential support to overcome the technical barriers of BIM. Although digital management in the sector is still incipient, the integration of AI with BIM is a strategic step towards process optimization and the consolidation of Industry 4.0 in construction.
