Risk mapping in Primary Care is one of the work processes to be "learned" by undergraduate nursing students, and environmental health education is an important educational tool. This experience report aims to describe the use of participatory approaches to environmental education and active methodology as a didactic-pedagogical resource for risk mapping in the territory of a Basic Health Unit within the scope of the Nursing course at the State University of Mato Grosso. To this end, theoretical activities developed in the classroom were used, as well as practical field actions in the selected community, employing the environmental education methodologies "Photovoice" and "Integrated and Participatory Panel," concurrently with techniques of "Semi-structured Interview" with residents and "Open Interview" with key informants. To contextualize the discussions, information about the neighborhoods was gathered using data from the Demographic Census of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) in 2010. Regarding the risks perceived by students and residents, environmental problems are exacerbated by the lack of urban infrastructure. The effects on the living conditions of residents are both social and health-related. The IBGE sanitation data partially reflect the perceived environmental conditions.
