Abstract

Manipulation of the ear canal with cotton swabs is a culturally ingrained practice associated with significant risks, such as cerumen impaction, otitis, and tympanic membrane perforation. This qualitative study evaluated students' perceptions and practices regarding aural hygiene before and after an educational intervention, aiming to analyze their awareness, knowledge, and behavioral intentions. The methodology involved an indirect textual reconstruction of participant statements from an observational record, translating summarized attitudes and reactions into direct discourse for thematic analysis. The results initially revealed a normalized habit and a significant knowledge gap, with students expressing surprise upon learning about the associated dangers. The presentation of a real case of complication served as a powerful reinforcement of the message. Ultimately, a clear intention for behavioral change was observed, with participants declaring their decision to discontinue the use of cotton swabs and to act as information multipliers among family and friends. It is concluded that targeted educational interventions are effective strategies for raising awareness, transforming misconceptions, and encouraging the adoption of preventive hearing health practices, with a potential multiplier effect within the community.
